There is a subduction zone along the western North American plate and the eastern Pacific plate, causing volcanoes to form inshore along the North American plate as the Pacific plate subducts beneath it. Subduction zones are often ociated with high magnitude earthquakes as well. The mountain ranges ociated with the west coast of the U.S. are due to the Laramide orogeny. There is a divergent plate boundary along the eastern North American plate and the Western Eurasia plate and Western African plate, making the Atlantic Ocean basin.
