What is the "Brits have bad teeth" stereotype all about?

Seriously, why would people think that? I have heard it so often and I just don't understand it. I know it's just a stereotype which many people don't believe and I know that all nationalities are stereotyped, but it's so widespread and not at all based on fact. I'm not annoyed, just a little perplexed.
