Why was the Electoral College created by the farmers of the Constitution?

No TV's, Radios, Internet, m syndicated newspapers. They didn't feel that the people were educated enough to choose a president. The country was also very much focused on states back then. They wouldn't say "I'm American." They would say "I'm Virginian." They were afraid that people would only vote for a candidate from their state.
